In my opinion, this is one of the best sounding set of speakers out there for this price. Great low end bass notes for a speaker this size and a natural sounding tweeter that isn’t too bright (although I still prefer the -3 dB setting). They are also not that deep so aren’t hard to fit most factory speaker locations. The crossovers are bi-ampable, too for even more control of your setup.

If you are looking for high quality and high power sound for less than $300, these are for you.

In fact, these speakers are so good, I have them in my personal vehicle.

First thing you notice with these is the bass response. For such a normal looking 6.5″ speaker, these put out a lot of low end, not earth shattering or even comparable to a subwoofer obviously, but for a speaker in this price range, it’s pretty impressive. 

The tweeter is nice and natural sounding and not too bright or overly harsh. It’s also pretty small compared to some component sets or even the older model of these speakers.

Overall, these speakers sound great even without any EQ or external processing. Everything sounds nice and clear without any crazy peaks in the frequency response.

These speakers come with everything you need for installation: screws, grills, a few different tweeter mounting options. They also have the tweeter attenuation option on the bi-ampable crossover.

Bi-amping a crossover is awesome if you have an extra pair of channels on your amp and especially if you have time alignment. This allows you to run the passive crossovers and time align the tweeter separately from the woofer. Or if you don’t have time alignment, you can use this feature to adjust the woofer gain separately from the tweeter for even more midbass. This alone adds a ton of value and features to this set.

Woofer
The woofer is pretty basic looking with a decent size magnet. Don’t let this fool you though.

Tweeter
The tweeters are also pretty basic looking, but once again don’t let this put you off.

Crossover
Sticking with the theme of basic, the crossovers also don’t look like anything special. Just a decent sized black rectangle with woofer/tweeter inputs and outputs.

I present the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX (discontinued)

This radio is Apply CarPlay and Android Auto compatible with AppRadio mode available for either phone. This radio will give you full phone support as well as provide you with navigation when your smartphone is connected. Don’t worry, though, it also works great if you have no intentions of using a smartphone with it.

It features 3 sets of 4V preouts as well as your typical backup camera compatibility and video in/out for DVD players or rear seat entertainment.

Sound quality wise it has a 13 band graphic equalizer, auto EQ and time alignment (with optional auto-EQ mic), 24 bit DAC, and FLAC support.

If you don’t want to have to use your phone for navigation, there is also a 6.2″ available with built in navigation for around the same price: the AVIC-5200NEX.

2017 Model Update

The AVH-4200NEX has been replaced with the AVH-4201NEX which is pretty much exactly the same, except for now it comes with a backup camera. For the same price!

These were my first component speaker set. I got them for around $90, and for that price they are great. The oversized 6.75″ woofers deliver decent low end performance, and the big silk dome tweeters deliver natural sounding highs with a relatively low crossover point. The crossover has a -3dB setting to quiet the tweeter some (and you need it).

If you are looking for a low cost set of decent components, definitely add these to your list.

Sound Quality  (3.5 / 5)

I give the sound quality a 3.5/5 since the bass response wasn’t like I was expecting based on other reviews. I know they aren’t going to be like mini subs in the door, but they still lacked a little.

The tweeters are super bright. I like my sound pretty flat with a little bit of bass added and a gradual roll off on the high end. They had some pretty harsh peaks around 4-5k Hz but probably mostly due to my ~45° off-axis installation. The crossover has a switch to turn the tweeter down -3dB which helps, but you will still need some sort of EQ to keep your ears from bleeding.

Even with these “problems” the speakers don’t sound bad, especially for this price. With a good processor and EQ I’m sure you could dial them in pretty nicely.

Despite the subpar SQ, the value of this component set is great. The parts are very well designed and look nice. That combined with the ~$100 price means great value with these.

These speakers come with everything you need for installation: screws, spacers, 5×7/6×8 adapter plates, at least three tweeter mounting options, and a punch out on the box for tracing a cutout for custom installations. They also have the tweeter attenuation option on the crossover.

Woofer
The woofer is beautiful with its bronzish colored woven fiber cone. It has a big magnet and sturdy basket. Very solid speaker.

Tweeter
The tweeters aren’t too bad looking, but I think they can be better. The tweeters have wave guides to control sound dispersion and widen the sound stage, but they are huge and because they are so big, you don’t have many mounting options which is why I had to mount mine so far off-axis.

Crossover
The crossovers are nice looking. They are a bit on the big side, but I have definitely seen bigger. They do their job and look good doing it.
